HISTORY
Nemesis is a goddess of Greek mythology.
Coming from ancient Greek, the word Nemesis is derived from the verb distribute, but was used with different meanings by different authors. Homer used it in the Odyssey with a sense of disdain, as did Aristotle. However, Heródoto, Claudio Eliano and Plutarco attributed the sense of revenge. Due to the Greek goddess of the same name, it is understood that the term refers to the harmony that must exist in the world, compensating well with evil in equal measure. In contemporary culture, the term Nemesis has taken on the meaning of an enemy, a fearsome adversary.
The Greek Nemesis, however, was a second generation goddess, daughter of the goddess Nix. Some even went so far as to appoint her as the daughter of Zeus himself with the goddess Themis. In any case, she also lived on Olympus and represented divine vengeance. With this reputation, she was represented in several sculptures spread over several cities in the ancient world. Nemesis was the goddess charged with abating immoderation, censoring the excess of happiness or pride of kings. This is what he would have done with Croesus, for example, the king of Lydia. A man very happy with his wealth and power, he was punished by the goddess who led him to war against Cyrus II, king of Persia. His endeavor resulted in ruin and disgrace, making up for the excesses that had made him so happy before.
The goddess Nemesis is also related to another very famous myth in popular culture, that of Narcissus. This was an extremely happy man with his unparalleled beauty. His feeling of too much joy led him to despise love, which would have hurt many young maidens. These, despised and desolate, sought revenge on the goddess Nemesis, who provided a strong heat on earth to punish Narcissus.
